FYI: IEW's Excellence in Spelling: Some questions and answers.
 Author: KC July 5, 1999 at 13:40:41
I contacted Andrew at IEW to ask a few more questions re: the EIS program. Here's a copy of our exchange...it might answer a few questions some of you may have....

Hi Karen, thanks for your message and for your support by
pre-purchasing the spelling program.

>Hello Andrew,
>
>I do hope your move has gone well! Welcome to the east coast (I'm in NJ
>but am from NC).
Thanks. We like it so far, even with the humidity.
>
>I am writing with a few questions about "Excellence In Spelling" (or the
>"Phonetic Zoo"; am not sure which is its proper name!).
>
>1-I have sent in an order for the pre-release price of $85. Of course,
>I am chomping at the bit...any chance that it will be released before
>the said Sept. 1??
Very unlikely. I will be sending a letter around the end of July to all

those who pre-purchased the program giving confirmation of
level ordered

and an update on expected shipping date. It's a big project for me--the
biggest ever--and I'm basically producing the whole thing myself. You

can pray for me and all those involved with editing the
CD's, printing, etc.

>2-Can you elaborate on the "guarantee"? How does one guarantee success
>in a spelling program?

Use the program in the way we suggest and your child will
learn all the

rules and words or we'll refund your money. Very basic.
>3-Are there drills/exercises that cause students to USE these words, or
>are the auditory tests sufficient?
Not actually, but that's a good idea. We're trying to keep it as
auditory and self-directed as possible. You certainly could supplement

our materials with some 'traditional' exercises or some of
your own

design. I think our program will be an excellent supplement to Beverly

Gordon's "Spelling Power" book, and I may actually begin to
distribute

her book as a follow up resource. What we have that she doesn't is:

auditory input, high frequency for kids who need it, method
of

independent study, codified rules, jingles and hints. What her book has
that we don't provide is: long, graded lists of words.
>
>A final note: on your website for this spelling program, there are two
>spelling errors: "again" and "achieved"... just thought you should
>change them! [s]
>
Thanks. You're about the 856th person to pass that hidden test.
Congratulations! Actually, my ex-employee James, who designed the web

site, has been too busy to fix it and I haven't the time to
learn the

blasted program. At this moment I can either pray for James and suffer

this ignominity or trash the whole web site and pay someone
(or take time

to learn) to redo it. I chose the former.

Hope this helps,

Andrew.
