I have not personally read this, but it is outlined in the first 30 pages of "Reading Works", which is a companion manual to Spalding's "The Writing Road to Reading" (written by Jay Patterson, self-published, so contact me if you are interested and I will give you more info on ReadingWorks) Advanced decoding skills require a mastery of syntax. "GrammarWorks" by Jay Patterson teaches Syntactical Analysis, and is available from Amazon.com. The short answer, of course, is that children need to learn grammar in order to master higher level reading and writing skills. These resouces will give you some "meat"
Some more reading which MAY have references (from the reviews I have read on the classical educators email list) are books by Marva Collins "Marva Collin's Way" and also a brand new book on classical education "The Well-Trained Mind".
The grammar debate is caught up in the phonics debate. Too many people feel reading and grammar can be "caught" and thus do not need to be "taught". These are the whole-language proponents. This is the "war" you are engaged in. Arming yourself with solid research is a great idea. If you are up for a heavy read you can try the grand-daddy of multisensory education "Dr. Samuel Orton" and his book "Reading, Writing, and Speech Problems in Children AND Selected Papers"

AS I check Jay Patterson's bibliography in Reading Works I
find a more recent Jeanne Chall title "Learning to Read:
The Great Debate"

This should get you started :-)

Email me if you have trouble tracking any of this down.

I don't know where you live, but Jay Patterson attends a
reading conference each year at Concordia College at Fargo,
ND and talks about these issues.

Sincerely, Susan Davis
