I have never used Shurley Grammar but I just can't imagine me and my child singing and chanting back and forth to each other. I saw a second grade class in a classical school doing their grammar lesson and it was wonderful but I think that would be hard to duplicate in a homeschool situation. We began using Rod & Staff English when my oldest was in the third grade (he is now in seventh) and I think it is a VERY good curriculum. There is a textbook, a worksheet booklet (not all lessons have a corresponding worksheet), and a test booklet for each grade level. When I first bought it I thought my son would never go for all the writing and worksheets that were involved but that was not the case. He has always been a very good reader and sometimes he would just read the lesson and do it on his own without any direction from me. I think there is a real value in all the writing that was involved; it sort of cemented it in his mind. I have also used R & S English for child #2, and #'s 3 and 4 are not old enough yet. It is a very challenging and in depth course of study. The students have to diagram subjects, predicates, direct objects, adjectives, and adverbs. Just knowing how to define those terms is more than I ever new about grammar! Hope I have not muddied the waters for you. I realize that there is a lot to choose from "out there!" |
