I agree, Katherine! I have seen Shurley grammar in action and it may be great for a classroom, but I don't see why or how homeschoolers would want to try to use it(or spend all that money on it! _The Well Trained Mind_ recommends The Gift of Language(Abeka), and even tho I don't use many textbooks, I have used this and was very impressed. It also has too many exercises since it's designed for a classroom, but it teaches diagramming and lots of other stuff. My favorite way to teach it is simply to have a good Handbook of English as a reference and then develop your own program. Have the student copy rules into a composition book, then copy a short passage out of a favorite book and analyze it for whatever part of speech. This is very inexpensive because the Handbook will keep you busy for years! Beth |
