Because I have emphasized narration and "the big picture" in my children's education, I have done grammar only "informally" with my children until my plans for this year, when we will use a resource called "Grammar Free Fall" that is essentially a diagramming tool. Terry Robertson (Wldwmn7@aol.com) wrote it for public school students, and it is simple, friendly, and thorough. But after I had planned for this and separately planned to do Henle Latin, I cracked open my Henle and discovered sentence diagramming all over the place! The diagram styles differ a bit, so I will have to alter things a bit, but I believe a Henle parent could make great use of the Henle text's material to jump off into English grammar, having laid a foundation in earlier years of the basics of grammar: nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, punctuation, capitalization. We will use diagramming as our primary grammar study, incorporating the principles into our writing this year for a 6th, 4th, and 1st grader. I'll report in a few months how it is going. :-) Cindy Marsch |
