"Grammar Works" by Jay Patterson was designed to compliment any phonics-based language arts curriculum, but especially "The Writing Road to Reading", which I use and LOVE. It is not the material which is exceptional in this program, it is the presentation. Grammar is taught using the "3-step multisensory process". The lessons are taught very explicitedly, with a spiraling pattern through the years. Lesson plans are given for K-8 (with the K curriculum being a unique handwriting course whcih is taught through the multi-sensory process, most handwriting courses are strictly copywork.) Their is some chanting, but the core of the curriculum is the "Grammar Notebook" which the student creates through dictation and uses as his personal resource for grammar. The author, Jay Patterson, is a classroom teacher but his wife homeschools and the program was written with homeschoolers in mind. In fact, when they had it printed she insisted on the pages being perforated and three hole punched so that homeschoolers could take out the pages and move them around to fit the scope and sequence for the year they are teaching. "Grammar Works" is only instruction, you will need "Daily Grams" for daily reinforcement of concepts taught. Even so, "Grammar Works" is much more affordable than "Shurley". I emailed a couple people who have sold their copies of "Grammar Works" and both told me the same thing "I don't need a grammar program as explicit as "GrammarWorks" I feel the explicitedness of "Grammar Works" is what makes it a classical curriculum. Not having had formal grammar training of my own, I needed an explicit Grammar Curriculum. "Advanced Grammar Works" is in the works. I am looking forward to it being available in time for my 7 yo. I have recommended "Grammar Works" to several people on line and they have emailed me with their gratitude upon receiving their copy. sincerely, Susan Davis |
