    Also,diagramming can be very useful in understanding complex literature, which often contains very long sentences with all kinds of clauses that modify different parts of the sentence. If one has a good understanding of how all the parts relate, it's much easier to see that a particular phrase or word may be further describing something mentioned three or four lines previous. For instance, in one poem that my boys and I diagrammed mentally, there was an adverbial clause that actually appeared closer to the second of two compound verbs. However, because it was before the "and" (which was easily lost in all the other words),which joined the two, it could easily be determined that the adverbial clause really modifed the first of the two compound verbs.
