Most of my "hard core" grammar with the kids is during our Greek and Latin. HOWEVER, we do use Winston Grammar at present. It uses diacritic marks rather than diagramming. It is "work book" oriented, and light, in the sense that you can use it weekly. After that, they have an advanced Winston Grammar, but by that time, (if you are covering Latin and or Greek) your students are likely to be beyond the material. Really, if you are teaching the languages in the Trivium, you might want to consider Matin Latin. I understand that it covers much of the English Grammar. If your child is older, Henle is probably good too. I think sometimes we sweat too much over grammar. After the basics, I had them read topics in College Handbook of Style (the current edition is probably available through a local college campus book store). Rod and Staff might work too, but I always seemed to find College Handbook at garage sales cheaper than Rod And Staff. Get them through basic parts of speech; basic diagramming...and then move on to a language. If they read and write regularly, (and learn proofreading), it will all come together. |
