FYI: Components of Shurley Grammar
 Author: KC June 6, 1999 at 06:13:41
If you are considering Shurley Grammar, this may help you. I studied the "Resource Booklet" and the teacher's edition, and
wanted to share some of these components. (This is for Level
3, btw. I will be doing 1 and 3, but just have the materials for 3

right now.)

Points: -She is very clear on how to follow her
organization; lays it out with Day 1, Day 2, etc. -There
are the "jingles" for each part of speech (with which you
are probably somewhat familiar already); -There are the
"question-answer" oral flow instructions that teach the
students to talk through each part of speech; -After
learning to put together a variety of well constructed
sentences, there are units for writing: one is called a
"2-point paragraph", another is the "3-point paragraph";
-If you have Shurley materials, there is a toll-free number
to call even "after hours and weekends" for support, should
you need it; -There is a whole unit on "study skills" which
may or may not be necessary for homeschool students; -There
are regular "Oral Skill Builder Check" which makes sure
students keep certain skills sharp and automatic; -After
the parts of speech have been studied, and the student
moves into writing, another practice is "improving
sentences" where they use synonyms, antonyms, complete word
changes and vocabulary improvements; -After learning the
parts of speech, ways to improve writing and 2 and 3-part
paragraphs, there are writing sections for various
purposeful writing assignments: to pursuade, explain,
describe, narrate, write

letters and social notes. Creative writing and journal writing are
included. ("Doing the Shurley method of grammar year after year,

students are better able to apply their knowledge so
sentence structure to writing."); -Formal writing is
included; -Grammar is scheduled on a 3-day week rotation or
a 2-day week rotation; and -Punctuation patterns are
taught.

It certainly contains more than I had thought for a
"grammar program". I will replace SL's current grammar and
writing with this: I have never been pleased with SL's
creative writing direction...it to me is more of just a
"starter" to think of something to write, but no real
structure or instruction.

I hope that this helps you to get a clearer picture of what
is

involved. It *is* expensive, but

the advice to go with every other year sounds good.
