Long overdue introduction
 Author: DeniseV January 14, 2000 at 15:31:10
Hello everyone: I must apologize for my overdue intro, I joined in September! I'm Denise and my husband's name is Ray. We are the proud parents of four children: Christopher, age 12. Sara, age 10. Aleks, age 7. Nikolai, age 4. We live in Palmdale, CA. I bumped into this website by accident. I had just become aware of classical ed. and was trying to read anything that I could get my hands on. I linked onto here from another website. Quite frankly, I cannot remember how I was introduced to classical ed! Oh, I hate it when that happens! I do remember spending a lot of time on Christine Miller's website soaking up as much as I could. I requested catalogs from various suppliers friendly to classical ed methods and began trying to put together a curriculum for my three school-aged children. That was tough for me. What saved me was the book, The Well Trained Mind. The authors really helped to paint a picture for me that I could understand. I began classical ed. in earnest! We keep notebooks, of course! I have added Spanish and German to our daily studies as my husband and I are both bilingual and have families in each of these countries and wish that our children be able to communicate with their cousins as they all grow up. For Bible, we use the Studying God's Word texts by Christian Liberty Press. We don't use the spelling books recommended in the above book, but use the Writing Road to Reading in order to cover this area. We use Abeka for penmanship/copying, grammar, math, science, and some reading. We use Greenleaf Press for history as well as the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. We use the Learnables for Spanish and the Usborne First 100 Words in German, and First 1000 Words in Spanish. The Latin Road to English Grammar for Latin. Mind Benders by Critical Thinking Press and Software, for pre-logic resources. Finally, we use Writing Strands for, what else, writing! We cover music with a book by DK publishers and art via Drawing With Children, by Mona Brooks. We have school Tues. through Friday-Dad has Mondays off; we have school year round because that helps me to feel less pressured about "deadlines". The grades we're teaching are, 6th, 5th, 2nd, and a little pre-school. Any questions?
